- SAVE GENERAL ELECTION NIGHT CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS
Following last night's amendment to the Constitutional Reform and Governance Bill, General Election Night has been saved. For some months, local MP Tom Harris has been campaigning to ensure that the counting of ballots for the forthcoming general election should begin immediately after the close of polls and not, as some Returning Officers had wanted, the following day. Tom, whose Early Day Motions on the matter marked the start of the campaign, has been working tirelessly to convince Returning Officers and the government that an overnight count is essential. "I'm delighted with the result. Britain deserves to know the...

- DELAY IN ISSUING VISAS "UNACCEPTABLE", SAYS MP FOR GLASGOW SOUTH TOM HARRIS
Tom Harris has protested to the Home Office about the unacceptable delays in issuing visas to successful appeal applicants, particularly those from Pakistan and India. In a letter to the Home Office, he says that he is aware of a large number of occasions when visa appeals are successful, but then there are extremely long delays in the visa being issued. "The situation as it stands is unacceptable. If someone applies for a visa and the decision is made to grant it - whether this is after appeal or a first decision - that visa should be granted as soon...
- NATS FACING BOTH WAYS ON EAST COAST SERVICES, SAYS HARRIS
Nationalist ministers are misleading the public over their deliberately misleading response to Lord Adonis's announcement this morning, said Tom Harris, MP for Glasgow South. "They're claiming they welcome the new direct services on the East Coast Main Line between Glasgow and Leeds and Sheffield. "Yet, they're also claiming they're still pushing for the continuation of direct Glasgow-King's Cross services, despite the fact - undisputed by transport minister Stewart Stevenson - that it is not physically possible to provide both services to the North East of England and the existing services to London. "Stewart Stevenson understands the pressure on both rolling...
- HARRIS WELCOMES NEW EAST COAST MAIN LINE TIMETABLE AS 'GOOD FOR GLASGOW AND GOOD FOR SCOTLAND'
Glagow rail passengers will welcome the new East Coast Main Line (ECML) timetable unveiled today, Tom Harris said today The Glasgow South MP had lobbied ministers heavily after media speculation that Glasgow could be removed altogether from the new timetable, due to be introduced in May 2011. "I vetoed a proposal in 2007 to remove Glasgow-to-Edinburgh services from the franchise. When National Express handed back their franchise too I knew there would be a real threat to those services again and I told Andrew Adonis, the Transport Secretary, of my concerns. "He has done a tremendous job...
- Closed Circuit TV Bill will help put regulation on Home Office agenda
Local MP Tom Harris has presented the Closed Circuit Television (Monitoring and Promotion) Bill to Parliament. Inherited from the Glasgow North MP Ann McKechin, the Bill seeks to help provide an overall improvement in the base quality of CCTV systems in the UK. This would give vital support to local police forces, such as Strathclyde Police, in bringing forward prosecutions. Tom said, "CCTV footage plays a major part in many police investigations, especially in those by which the crime would be difficult to prove by any other means. Evidence suggests it leads to far more guilty verdicts and cuts the...

I've signed up as an individual, recognising the part that every member of society has to play if we're to lessen the effects of climate change. I'm hoping that being part of the campaign will give me ideas on how I can do my bit."...

reshuffle. Tom was told the news by the prime minister in a phone call to
his Glasgow home on Friday evening. Tom said: "Obviously I'm disappointed; I really enjoyed being a

the role of an MP is more important than any other. And of course I
will continue to support the gvernment from the back benches."...
- HARRIS DECLARES FOR GRAY IN LEADERSHIP CONTEST
EAST Lothian MSP Iain Gray will receive Tom's support in
the election underway for Labour's leader at Holyrood. The Glasgow South MP will support Pollok MSP Johann Lamont for
the deputy leader post. He said: "I was bitterly disappointed when, in 203, Iain lost
his Edinburgh Pentlands seat to the Conservatives. He had been one
of the most promising talents on Labour's benches and an
accomplished minister. His return to Holyrood in 2007 as MSP for
East Lothian was one of the few pieces of good news in an otherwise
bad result nationally. "I'm confident that, if elected, Iain wil provide a degree of
scrutiny and opposition...

years. When Tom was elected the new MP for Cathcart in 2001, he
agreed to take over the sponsorship of the competition. However, the absence of a similar competiton for the
constituency's many women bowlers was noticeable and, in 2005,
Carolyn offered to sponsor a new trophy. This was the first time

- Anti-social behaviour on the agenda
Labour's campaign team was knocking doors in Castlemilk
this morning to gauge the mood of Glasgow South

the forefront of residents' minds. Tom Harris, MP for Glasgow South, and Cathcart MSP Charlie
Gordon (pictured above, left) joined Labour activists as they spoke
to voters and distributed a Labour newsletter door-to-door. Tom said: "It's important that Labour is seen campaigning in
